The IT department for a European manufacturing company was creating reports through data extractions from different source systems and performing data integration directly in Excel or Tableau.

 

The group headquarters decided to implement an IT strategy based on Microsoft, so the regional subsidiary needed to follow the group strategy with Azure and Power BI.

 

They wanted a new scalable data platform on the cloud, which would integrate data from different sources such as Mapex, eTempo, Generix, Aprova, etc., modelling it to create complex production KPIs such as OEE, Downtime, % of scrap, etc.

 

The client also wanted to remove dependency on Excel and manual processes to become more efficient, thus avoiding data quality issues produced by manual data manipulation.

Our Approach

Our team designed and deployed a scalable enterprise data platform on Azure, with a data lake and data warehouse. The platform ingests data from multiple source systems (including MES tools such as Mapex) into the enterprise data lake and data warehouse with provision for retaining historical information.

 

Our team also performed data modelling to create complex production KPIs such as OEE, Downtime, % of scrap, etc.

 

On this new scalable Azure data platform, we built a reporting layer on Power BI with dashboards for all the different departments within the company, starting with Sales and P&L reporting and extending to the other functions. The reporting included high-level KPIs to assess and improve the company’s performance. We also built an application to introduce master data with Power Apps.

The new reporting layer enables faster creation of new reports and ease of use for self-service analysis and reporting, empowering the platform users and IT department to easily maintain and evolve their reporting.

 

The new KPI-based dashboards we built enable Sales, Marketing and Operations to gain a better understanding of their customers’ behaviour and needs, which in turn helps them control and improve their processes.
