Oracle Open World 2012- The Value of Data

Last week the annual Oracle Open World convention took place in San Francisco, and as always there were some interesting announcements about the Oracle analytics suite of products.

As we can see from Mark Hurd´s keynote on the 4th of October, one of the main problems that organizations are going to face in the short future is the growth of data.

Mark stated that “90% of the total data on the planet has been generated in the last two years” and he added that “by 2020 a data growth of 50x is expected while the disk storage industry is expected to grow by 15x”. This combination of current facts and future predictions indeed hints us that companies need to start working on their innovation strategies to handle and leverage all the data that generate.

During the second part of the keynote Balaji Yelamanchili, Oracle Senior Vice President of Product Development joined Mark Hurd to perform a demonstration centered on the NATO event that took place in Chicago in May 2012. The demo was pretty impressive using a tool that looked like Endeca with some visual customizations. On the demo we could see how structured and unstructured data are used together in real time to reveal useful insights that allowed Chicago Police Department to make better decisions about the deployment of the police units and the contact of witnesses trough social media channels.

Other main topics and announces that we could see during the different sessions were:

  • New incoming versions of OBIEE with new interesting presentation capabilities
  • New version of SmartView that will replace OBIEE MS Office BI client
  • News on the Mobile BI applications
  • Endeca and the Big data appliance playing key roles on the Big data strategy envisioned by Oracle
  • New versions of ODI on the roadmap and hints that the BI Apps team will probably support this next version of ODI as its ETL engine

So, to recap, no really big announces (like Exalytics last year) but several interesting things going on right now around Oracle Business Intelligence and Data Integration suits of products.

Stay tuned to the Clearpeaks blog to get more information about all these topics as soon as it’s available!
